Upload an Italian EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in French. The narrative register survives — both languages have a literary past tense — but Italian's word endings have to become French words.
The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.
The passato remoto and the passé simple do the same job in their respective literatures: a past tense that belongs to books rather than to speech. So an Italian novel's register reaches French intact, which is unusual and worth having.
What does not transfer is the suffix system. Italian tells you in the ending of a noun that the speaker finds it small, dear, oversized or contemptible; French has to say so with an adjective or a different noun. The sentence gets longer and blunter, and the only way it stays coherent over a book is if the same suffix on the same word is handled the same way each time.
Reading the whole book first is what produces that consistency, along with the names, the recurring terms and the tone.
A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.
Names, nicknames and recurring terms are collected first, so a character called three things stays one person.
About 4,500 words as a complete EPUB, punctuated with guillemets and dialogue dashes as a French edition would be.
Suffixes become words. A diminutive that was one syllable in Italian becomes an adjective in French — longer and more explicit than the original, and unavoidably so.
Cognates are the other risk. The two languages share an enormous vocabulary and disagree about a quiet fraction of it.
Dialect passages approximate. Italian written in heavy regional dialect is effectively another language.
Fifteen pages, not the book, and the text is sent to a server and discarded when the job ends.
Where the register calls for it, yes. Both are literary tenses that their readers recognise as a signal about what kind of book they are holding, so the signal crosses rather than being flattened.
They become French words — an adjective, a different noun, or a change of tone. What is guaranteed is consistency: a character habitually called by a diminutive is handled the same way on every appearance.
Yes: guillemets and dashes for dialogue, with a non-breaking space before the doubled punctuation marks, because a French book set with Italian quotation conventions reads as untranslated.
About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day.
