Translate a French book into Italian

Upload a French EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in Italian. These two share something rare: a past tense used only in literature, which means the narration can keep its exact register.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

French has the passé simple; Italian has the passato remoto. Both are tenses that exist in books and not in speech, and both signal "this is literature" to their readers. Between most language pairs that signal is lost — English has no tense that does it. Here it survives intact, which means a literary French narration can stay literary rather than being flattened into ordinary past tense.

The formality carries over too: vous becomes Lei without inference.

The danger is the usual one for close Romance languages. Fermer is to close and fermare is to stop. Morbide is morbid and morbido is soft. Caméra is a film camera and camera is a room. The overlap is vast and the disagreements are silent, so the translation follows meaning rather than resemblance.

How it works

  1. Choose your French EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.

  2. The model reads the whole book

Names, terms and the narrative register — including whether the narration uses the literary past — are settled once.

  3. The first 15 pages come back in Italian

About 4,500 words, translated through meaning rather than through cognates.

  4. Download, or read it here

A complete EPUB with the book's own styling, punctuated as an Italian edition would be.

Honest limits

Cognates are the risk. Two close Romance languages share thousands of words and disagree about enough of them to quietly spoil a chapter.

Italian suffixes have no French source. Where Italian would naturally use a diminutive, the French original had an adjective, so the suffix is used only where it genuinely fits rather than sprinkled in.

Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.

Questions

Does the passé simple become the passato remoto?

Where the register calls for it, yes — and this pair is one of the few where that is possible at all. Both tenses are literary rather than spoken, so the signal the French was sending to its readers reaches the Italian ones too.

Does vous become Lei?

Yes, directly. Both languages mark formality in the pronoun, so the relationship is read from the source rather than inferred, and reading the whole book first keeps it consistent.

How are false friends handled?

By translating what the sentence means rather than what the word looks like. It is worth spot-checking a few in the sample; they are the failure mode that reads perfectly.

How much is free?

About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day per person.
