MOBI → EPUB
Bring an old Kindle file into the format everything reads today. Amazon retired MOBI in 2022 — EPUB is what Kindle itself now accepts.

MOBI was Amazon's ebook format for over a decade, and if you have a folder of books bought or downloaded before about 2015 that is what most of them are. It is a Palm database container — the same structure Palm Pilots used — holding compressed records of marked-up text. Everything a reader needs is in there; it is simply wrapped in a container almost nothing outside Amazon's ecosystem opens.
The direction of travel has reversed since. Amazon stopped accepting MOBI for new uploads in 2022, and Kindle devices now read EPUB through Send to Kindle. So converting MOBI to EPUB is not a compromise or a workaround — it is moving a file forward into the format that Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books, Calibre and every other reader all support.
Because a MOBI already contains marked-up text rather than a layout, this is more of an unpacking than a conversion, and very little is lost. The one thing that stops it dead is DRM: a book locked to a Kindle account cannot be opened by this tool, and removing that lock is not something we support.
Format by format
| What it does | MOBI | EPUB |
|---|---|---|
| Introduced | 2000, from Mobipocket; adopted by Amazon in 2007 | 2007, by the IDPF; now maintained by the W3C |
| Container | A Palm database with compressed text records | A zip archive of XHTML, CSS and images |
| Status today | Retired — Amazon stopped accepting it in 2022 | The current standard everywhere, Kindle included |
| Styling | Limited; a subset of very old HTML | Full CSS, including fonts and layout |
| Opens in | Old Kindles, Calibre | Apple Books, Kobo, Calibre, Kindle via Send to Kindle |
| Sold in stores | No longer | Yes |
What actually changes
A MOBI file already holds marked-up text in a Palm database container. This unpacks it and repackages it as EPUB, so almost everything survives. The one thing that stops it dead is DRM.
What survives
What does not
How it works
Combo files holding both MOBI and KF8 are detected, and the newer part is used.
Each text record is decompressed and parsed on your own machine.
Ready for Apple Books, Kobo, Calibre — or Kindle, which takes EPUB now.
FAQ
Nothing, with this tool. Books bought from the Kindle store are locked to your account, and removing that lock is not something we support. It works on DRM-free files: your own manuscripts, Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, StoryBundle, Humble Bundle and most indie publishers.
Yes. Amazon stopped accepting MOBI uploads in 2022 and Kindle devices read EPUB through Send to Kindle. Converting the other way — EPUB to MOBI — is solving a problem that no longer exists for almost everyone.
Try them here. Many .azw files are MOBI inside and open fine; .prc is the same container under a different extension. If the file turns out to be KF8 the AZW3 tool is the better door, though both run the same reader underneath.
No. Highlights, notes and reading position are stored by your Amazon account rather than inside the book file, so no converter can carry them across — not this one and not Calibre.
Very little. Because a MOBI stores marked-up text rather than a page layout, the chapters, headings, emphasis and reading order all transfer. The losses are Kindle-only features that have no EPUB equivalent.
Yes — Send to Kindle accepts EPUB, so you can mail or upload the converted file to your own Kindle library. That is the whole reason this direction is the useful one.
Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks publish them openly, most indie and technical publishers sell them unlocked, and anything you wrote yourself has no DRM to begin with.
DualBook turns the EPUB you just made into a bilingual edition in over 30 languages.
