Upload an English EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in Swedish. This pair is spared the problem that dominates most of the others — Swedish simply abolished formal address, and everyone is du.
The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.
In the 1960s and 70s Sweden stopped using its formal pronoun almost entirely, and modern Swedish addresses a stranger, a customer and a head of state the same way. That removes the decision that forces every translation into German, French, Polish or Korean to model its cast before it can write dialogue. Here the dialogue is simply easier.
What replaces it is quieter and more pervasive: every Swedish noun is either an en word or an ett word, and that choice governs the article, the adjective ending and the definite form — which Swedish attaches to the end of the noun rather than putting in front of it. There is no rule that predicts which gender a noun takes. Getting one wrong is small; getting the same noun wrong inconsistently is what makes a text read as machine-made.
Reading the whole book first fixes the recurring terms once, so they keep the same gender and the same form throughout.
A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.
Names and recurring terms are fixed once, so a noun keeps the same gender and the same definite form on every page.
About 4,500 words, translated as continuous prose rather than sentence by sentence.
A complete EPUB. å, ä and ö pass through as ordinary text and render everywhere.
Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words, counted in words rather than chapters.
No period formality. Because modern Swedish dropped the formal pronoun, a historical novel that would have used it in the original setting still comes back in contemporary address.
Compounds are written as compounds, and the styling lets a long one wrap rather than overflow.
The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.
No, and that is correct modern Swedish. The formal pronoun fell out of general use half a century ago, and putting it back would read as either historical costume or as a misunderstanding of the language.
As part of writing Swedish rather than by lookup — but what the tool guarantees is consistency: reading the whole book first fixes the recurring nouns, so the same word does not take one gender in chapter one and another in chapter six.
Yes, as ordinary Unicode characters. No transliteration to aa/ae/oe, which would be wrong in a book, and no font substitution.
About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day per person.
