Italian, like Spanish and French, refuses to let "you" stay neutral. Every verb of dialogue commits to tu or Lei, so each line is also a statement about how two people stand with each other — and a translator working paragraph by paragraph re-decides that as often as it re-reads.
The tense question is the Italian one. Literary narration can use the passato remoto, which in most of the north is not spoken at all and in much of the south still is. Choosing it sets the whole texture of the book, and it has to be one choice held throughout, not a coin flip per chapter.
Both come out of the same mechanism: the model reads the complete text and writes a guide — names, recurring terms, tone, narrative voice, who addresses whom how — and the sample is translated against that guide rather than against the paragraph before it.

It follows the register of the original. A literary novel usually gets it; a contemporary first-person voice usually does not. The thing that matters more than the choice is that it is one choice for the whole sample.
Where the Italian would naturally take one. The suffix system — -ino, -one, -accio — carries affection, scale and contempt that English usually expresses with an adjective, and using it is part of writing Italian rather than English with Italian words.
