Translate a Ukrainian book into Russian

Upload a Ukrainian EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in Russian. The closer two languages sit, the more damage a word that looks familiar can do.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

Неділя is Sunday and неделя is a week. Місто is a city and место is a place. Час is time in one and an hour in the other. A translation built on resemblance produces prose that reads naturally and misstates ordinary facts, which is worse than prose that reads badly — nothing signals to the reader that anything went wrong.

The other thing to handle is the vocative. Ukrainian changes a name when someone is addressed by it; Russian does not, so those forms have to be recognised as the same name rather than as unfamiliar words.

Reading the whole book first collects the cast, the name forms and the recurring terms before anything is translated, which is what keeps one person from becoming two across a chapter break.

How it works

  1. Choose your Ukrainian EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.

  2. The model reads the whole book

Names are mapped across every case form, the vocative included, so one person keeps one Russian spelling.

  3. The first 15 pages come back in Russian

About 4,500 words as a complete EPUB you can download or read here.

Honest limits

Look-alike words are the whole risk. The two languages share a vast vocabulary and disagree about a small, ordinary part of it.

Mixed speech loses its marking. Where a Ukrainian book renders speech as a Russian-Ukrainian mixture to characterise a speaker, the distinction cannot survive into a Russian text.

Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.

Questions

How are look-alike words handled?

By reading the sentence rather than the word. This is the one failure mode in this pair that produces completely natural output, so it is worth spot-checking a few in the sample.

What happens to vocative name forms?

They are recognised as the same name and rendered in the form Russian would use, because Russian does not have a working vocative. Reading the whole book first is what makes that recognition reliable across every case form.

What about deliberately mixed speech?

The meaning survives; the signal about the speaker mostly does not. A mixture of the two languages cannot be represented inside a text written in one of them without inventing an accent.

How much is free?

About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day.

Translate the whole book

The app runs the same engine across the entire book and can show the Russian next to the Ukrainian, with your position synced between devices.
