Translate a Spanish book into Portuguese

Upload a Spanish EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in Portuguese. These are the two closest major languages in this catalogue, which makes a careless translation almost indistinguishable from a good one until you read it.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

A Spanish sentence can often be turned into a Portuguese-looking sentence by changing a few endings, and the result is portunhol: recognisable, wrong, and hard to spot for anyone who speaks the other language. The false friends are where it shows. Exquisito is exquisite in Spanish; esquisito is odd in Portuguese. Polvo is dust in Spanish and octopus in Portuguese. Oficina is an office in Spanish and a workshop in Portuguese.

So the translation goes through meaning rather than through resemblance, even where the resemblance is overwhelming — which is the entire discipline of this pair.

The variety question comes with it: Brazilian and European Portuguese differ in pronoun use, in verb constructions and in everyday nouns, and a book has to commit to one. That decision is made from the whole text before any translating starts.

How it works

  1. Choose your Spanish EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.

  2. The model reads the whole book

The variety, the register and the names are settled once, from the complete text.

  3. The first 15 pages come back in Portuguese

About 4,500 words, translated through meaning — which for this pair means deliberately not trusting the cognates.

  4. Download, or read it here

A complete EPUB with the book's own styling. Accents, cedilla and til render everywhere.

Honest limits

Cognates are the entire risk. Two languages this close share thousands of words and disagree about a few hundred, and those few hundred are where a fluent-looking translation says the wrong thing.

No variety switch. The tool will not let you demand Brazilian or European Portuguese; it does guarantee the sample does not mix them.

Fifteen pages, not the book — about 4,500 words — and the text is sent to a server and discarded when the job ends.

Questions

How are false friends handled?

By translating what the sentence means rather than what the word looks like. It is worth spot-checking a few in the sample, because this is the one failure mode in this pair that reads completely naturally.

Brazilian or European Portuguese?

Whichever the book's setting and register point to. There is no picker, but the variety is fixed from the whole book before translating starts, so the sample does not drift between them.

Is the result real Portuguese or Spanish with Portuguese spelling?

That is the right question to ask of any Spanish-to-Portuguese translation. Reading the whole book first and setting the register once is what produces Portuguese prose rather than Spanish sentences in Portuguese clothing.

How much is free?

About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day per person.

The app runs the same engine across the entire book and can show the Portuguese next to the Spanish, with your position synced between devices.
