Translate a Russian book into German

Upload a Russian EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in German. Russian has no articles at all, and German demands one — with a gender — in front of almost every noun.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

Книга is book, a book and the book, and the Russian sentence never distinguishes them. German has to: definite or indefinite, and in one of three genders, inflected for case. That is a decision in front of nearly every noun, and it is not arbitrary — whether a thing has been mentioned before, whether the reader is expected to know it, whether it is generic. Getting it wrong does not break the sentence; it quietly changes what the narrator assumed you already knew.

Solving that needs the surrounding text, not the sentence. The model reads the whole book first, so what has been introduced and what has not is known before any translating begins.

Names are the other work: Russian declines them, and one character appears in several forms plus a set of diminutives. Those have to be recognised as one person before the German can name them consistently.

How it works

  1. Choose your Russian EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.

  2. The model reads the whole book

Names, patronymics and diminutives are mapped to one person each, across every case form they appear in.

  3. The first 15 pages come back in German

About 4,500 words as a complete EPUB, with the verbs where German puts them and the articles supplied from context.

Honest limits

Articles are inferred. Russian supplies none, so definiteness is read from the surrounding narrative — well-grounded, not certain.

Aspect flattens. Russian marks completed versus ongoing action in the verb itself; German has to imply it, and some of the precision is lost.

Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.

Questions

How are German articles chosen?

From context — what has been introduced, what the narrator assumes the reader knows, whether the noun is generic. Russian gives no signal at all, which is why this is decided from the whole book rather than from the sentence in hand.

Will one character keep one name?

Yes. The full name, the patronymic and the diminutives are recorded as belonging to one person before translating starts, so the German text does not appear to acquire extra characters.

Does вы become Sie?

Yes, directly — both languages mark formality in the pronoun, so it transfers without inference.

How much is free?

About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day.
