Translate a Russian book into English

Upload a Russian EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in English. There is one reason above all others that English readers get lost in Russian novels, and it is not the politics or the length — it is that every character has four names.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

Dmitri Ivanovich Karamazov is also Dmitri, also Mitya, also Mitenka, and which one appears tells you who is speaking and how they feel. To a Russian reader that is information. To an English reader with no key, it is four people. Translations have been solving this by hand for a century, and the solution always requires knowing the whole cast before you start.

That is exactly what reading the entire book first provides. Before a word is translated, the model collects the names, the patronymics and the diminutives and records which ones belong to the same person — so the English does not quietly introduce a stranger halfway down page three.

Cases make the problem harder, not easier: the same name appears in six different endings depending on its role in the sentence, so recognising two forms as one person is not string matching.

How it works

  1. Choose your Russian EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.

  2. The model reads the whole book

Names, patronymics and diminutives are collected and mapped to one person each, across every case form they appear in.

  3. The first 15 pages come back in English

About 4,500 words as a complete EPUB you can download or read here. English comes out shorter than the Russian.

Honest limits

Вы becomes nothing. English has one "you", so the moment a Russian character switches to ты — often the emotional turn of a whole scene — has to be carried by tone instead of grammar.

Diminutives lose their edge. Митенька is not just "Mitya" plus affection; the suffix does work English has no machinery for.

Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.

Questions

Will it keep one character to one name?

That is the main reason it reads the entire book before translating anything. The full name, the first name, the patronymic and the diminutives are recorded as belonging to one person, so the English text does not read as though the cast doubled.

Are patronymics preserved?

Yes, where they carry meaning — being addressed by name and patronymic is a specific register in Russian, and flattening it to a first name throws away what the scene was doing. Where it would simply confuse an English reader, the register is carried in the surrounding words instead.

Does it handle pre-reform orthography?

Text using the pre-1918 letters is read as text, so old editions do open. What is not attempted is matching an archaic Russian with an archaic English; the register follows the book but the English is modern.

How much is free?

About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day.

Read the whole book

The app translates the entire book and can show the English beside the Russian, which is the quickest way to see which Dmitri you are reading about.
