Upload a Portuguese EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in French. The first thing this direction has to get right is where the dialogue ends — because Portuguese does not always say.
The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.
Portuguese novels usually open a line of speech with a dash and then let the narrator's words continue on the same line, without closing anything. French expects guillemets and a clear boundary. Working out where the character stops talking and the narrator resumes is a reading problem, not a typographic one, and getting it wrong puts the narrator's observations into a character's mouth — an error that reads completely fluently.
The formality transfers well: Portuguese marks distance in its forms of address and French marks it in the pronoun, so the relationship is stated rather than inferred. It still has to be mapped once, because Brazilian Portuguese's everyday pronoun takes formal verb forms, which is exactly the sort of thing a paragraph-by-paragraph translator misreads.
Reading the whole book first sets that mapping, along with the names, the terms and the narrative register.
A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.
The register, the forms of address and the names are settled once, from the complete text.
About 4,500 words, with dialogue boundaries worked out and set in French guillemets and dashes.
A complete EPUB with the book's own styling. Accents and nasal vowels render everywhere.
Dialogue boundaries are inferred where the Portuguese leaves them open. That is the nature of the convention; the guide makes the reading consistent rather than certain.
Cognates are the other risk. Two Romance languages share a great deal and disagree quietly about a fraction of it.
Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words.
The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.
Yes, and it is the first thing worth checking in the sample. It is a reading problem before it is a formatting one, because the Portuguese frequently does not mark where the speech ends.
Yes. The differences — pronoun use, gerund versus infinitive constructions, everyday vocabulary — are read as what they are, and reading the whole book first keeps the register consistent across a long text.
Yes: guillemets and dialogue dashes, with a non-breaking space before the doubled punctuation marks, which is what a French edition uses.
About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day per person.
