Upload a French EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in Portuguese. The vous is already marked for you; what has to be decided is which Portuguese the book will be in.
The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.
French does this direction a favour English cannot: the formality is stated. A translator does not have to reconstruct who addresses whom formally, because every verb in the source says so. That removes the largest source of drift.
The decision that replaces it is the variety. Brazilian and European Portuguese differ in pronoun use, in verb constructions and in ordinary vocabulary, and the split is wider than the equivalent one in Spanish. A book has to commit to one and stay there, and nothing in the French points to an answer — so it is decided from the book's setting and register before any translating starts.
The mapping is not quite mechanical either, because the everyday Brazilian pronoun takes grammatically formal verb forms. Formal and informal are not where a word-by-word translator expects to find them.
A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.
The variety, the register and the names are settled once, from the complete text.
About 4,500 words as a complete EPUB, with dialogue set the way a Portuguese edition would set it.
No variety switch. The free tool will not let you demand Brazilian or European Portuguese; it does guarantee the sample does not mix them.
Formality is mapped, not copied. The two systems mark distance differently, so the pairing is a judgement held for the whole book.
Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words.
The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.
Whichever the book's setting and register point to; there is no picker. The variety is fixed from the whole book before translating starts, so the sample does not drift between them.
Onto whichever form of address matches the relationship — which is a mapping rather than a copy, because the everyday Brazilian pronoun takes formal verb forms and so sits in an unexpected place on the scale.
Yes, post-1990 Agreement spelling, which is what current books in both Brazil and Portugal use.
About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day.
