Translate a French book into German

Upload a French EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in German. The formality carries straight across — vous becomes Sie — but almost nothing else about the sentence stays where it was.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

French builds a sentence by adding words; German builds it by moving them. A subordinate clause sends its verb to the end, which means the German cannot be written until the French clause has been read to its close. Translating left to right produces sentences that are individually parseable and collectively wrong-footed, and it is the most common way machine translation into German gives itself away.

What does transfer for free is the vous/tu distinction: German has the same split, so who addresses whom formally is already stated in the source instead of having to be inferred.

The typography changes too. French sets dialogue in guillemets and dashes; German uses its own low-high quotation marks. A German edition punctuated in the French style reads as untranslated on the first page.

How it works

  1. Choose your French EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.

  2. The model reads the whole book

Names, recurring terms and the narrative register are settled once, from the complete text.

  3. The first 15 pages come back in German

About 4,500 words, rebuilt as German sentences with the verbs where German puts them.

  4. Download, or read it here

A complete EPUB using German quotation conventions, with the translation set to wrap so long compounds do not overflow.

Honest limits

German runs longer. The sample will fill more screen than the French did, and compound nouns can be very long — the styling lets them wrap rather than push the page sideways.

Sentence structure is rebuilt, not preserved. Where French nests more deeply than German comfortably carries, clauses are split — consistently, as part of the register set from the whole book.

Fifteen pages, not the book — about 4,500 words — and the text is sent to a server and discarded when the job ends.

Questions

Does vous become Sie?

Yes, directly. Both languages mark formality in the pronoun, so the relationship is stated in the French rather than inferred — which removes the largest single source of drift in translations into German.

Is the dialogue punctuated the German way?

Yes. German low-high quotation marks rather than French guillemets, because a German book punctuated in the French style announces itself as a machine translation before the reader has finished the first page.

What happens to long French sentences?

They are carried where German will take them and split where it will not, with the decision made once as part of the register rather than freshly in each paragraph.

How much is free?

About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day per person.
