Make a French-German bilingual book

Each French paragraph with its German translation directly beneath it, in one EPUB. Read the French first; the German is there for the sentence whose shape you could not see.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

Between these two the obstacle is structure, not vocabulary. German holds its verb back until the end of a subordinate clause, which means a French reader gets to the end of a German sentence before learning what it was about — and no dictionary entry helps with that. Seeing the same content built both ways, paragraph after paragraph, is what makes the shape start to feel predictable.

The formality is worth watching too. Both languages mark it, and seeing vous answered by Sie makes the correspondence concrete in a way a grammar note does not.

Your browser opens the EPUB, walks each paragraph and inserts the German beneath it inside the original file, rewriting only the chapter documents that received a translation, so cover, navigation and metadata pass through untouched.

How it works

  1. Choose a French EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The bilingual file is assembled in your browser, not on a server.

  2. The model reads the whole book

Names, terms and the formal/familiar map are fixed once, so the German keeps its footing across chapters.

  3. German is inserted under each paragraph

Each translation is styled beneath its paragraph and set to wrap — and German's capitalised nouns make the two blocks easy to tell apart before you read a word.

  4. Read it here, or on any device

A complete EPUB carrying the book's own fonts and stylesheets.

The trap, and the honest limits

Your eye will go to whichever language you read better. Read the French paragraph first, every time — the seconds of not understanding are the practice.

The German runs longer. Expect the translated paragraphs to take more room than the French above them; that is the language, not a fault.

Fifteen pages get translations. The rest of the book stays in French inside the same file.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job ends. The file never leaves your device.

Questions

Which side should I read first?

French first, every paragraph. With this pair the moment of not understanding is usually a clause structure resolving, which is worth more than a looked-up word.

Do long German words break the page on a phone?

No. The inserted paragraphs are styled to let an over-long compound break across lines rather than force the page to scroll sideways.

Will it open on a Kindle?

Yes. Kindle has accepted EPUB directly since 2022; email the file to your device or copy it across.

Do the cover and table of contents survive?

Yes. The browser rebuilds the archive entry by entry and only rewrites the chapter files that received a translation, so everything else passes through untouched.

The whole book, in parallel

The app builds the bilingual version of the entire book, with tap-to-look-up and your reading position synced across devices.
