Translate a Bengali book into English

Upload a Bengali EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in English. Bengali marks respect in its verbs even when talking about someone who is not present — and English has no place to put that.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

Bengali distinguishes সে from তিনি: the same "he" or "she", but the second one is deferential, and the verb changes with it. So a Bengali narrator is constantly telling you how the people in the story rank relative to one another, in a channel English simply does not have. Translate it word for word and that whole layer disappears silently; the sentences read fine and the social world flattens.

The other thing to handle is register. Nineteenth and early twentieth century Bengali — which is a great deal of what people want translated — is written in a literary form that differs from modern Bengali in its verb endings and pronouns. Reading it as though it were contemporary produces small, persistent errors.

Reading the whole book first is what settles both: the cast, the relationships, the register and the recurring terms go into a guide before a word is translated.

How it works

  1. Choose your Bengali EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.

  2. The model reads the whole book

The register and the cast are established first — which matters more here than in most pairs, because older Bengali conjugates differently.

  3. The first 15 pages come back in English

About 4,500 words as a complete EPUB you can download or read here.

Honest limits

Deference disappears. The সে/তিনি distinction, and the three levels of "you", all collapse into English's single pronouns. Tone can carry some of it; it cannot carry all of it.

Older texts are harder. The literary register is read correctly, but a century-old novel carries assumptions about its readers that no translation supplies.

Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.

Questions

Does it handle older literary Bengali?

Yes. The older literary form uses different verb endings and pronouns from modern Bengali, and reading the whole book first is what establishes which one the text is in before any translating starts — rather than discovering it a chapter at a time.

What happens to সে versus তিনি?

The deference becomes register: how the narrator phrases the sentence, what the characters are called, how they are described. English has no honorific third person, so there is nowhere else for it to go.

Are Bengali names romanised consistently?

Yes, and the same person keeps the same spelling throughout — which is the point of collecting the names from the whole book before translating anything, since Bengali romanisation has several competing conventions.

How much is free?

About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day.

Read the whole book

The app translates the entire book and can show the English beside the Bengali, so the layer English cannot carry is still there to look at.
