Make a Spanish-French bilingual book

Each Spanish paragraph with its French translation directly beneath it, in one EPUB. Two languages close enough that the parallel form teaches by contrast rather than by rescue.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

A Spanish speaker reading French understands a great deal at first sight, which changes what a parallel text is for. You are rarely stuck; you are frequently almost right. The translation underneath is there to tell you which of your near-misses were misses — the cognate that means something else, the tense used where your language would use a different one, the preposition that does not correspond.

That is a different and in some ways better use of a bilingual book: not a crutch for comprehension but a constant, cheap correction of the assumptions two close languages encourage you to make.

Your browser opens the EPUB, walks each paragraph and inserts the French beneath it inside the original file, rewriting only the chapter documents that received a translation, so cover, navigation and metadata survive untouched.

How it works

  1. Choose a Spanish EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The bilingual file is assembled in your browser, not on a server.

  2. The model reads the whole book

Names, terms and the formal/familiar map are fixed once, so the French keeps its footing from chapter to chapter.

  3. French is inserted under each paragraph

Each translation is styled beneath its paragraph, easy to tell apart even though the two languages look similar.

  4. Read it here, or on any device

A complete EPUB carrying the book's own fonts and stylesheets.

The trap, and the honest limits

The trap here is confidence. With two close languages it is easy to skim the original, feel you understood it, and move on. The French underneath only helps if you actually check against it.

The lengths are similar, so the two blocks sit close in size — which makes the styling that distinguishes them more important than usual.

Fifteen pages get translations. The rest of the book stays in Spanish inside the same file.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job ends. The file never leaves your device.

Questions

Which side should I read first?

Spanish first, every paragraph — then check, rather than glance. The languages are close enough that the checking is where the value is.

Is this useful if I already read French reasonably well?

That is the main case for it. When you are rarely stuck, what you need is not translation but correction: the false friends and the divergent tenses that you would otherwise keep getting slightly wrong without ever finding out.

Will it open on a Kindle?

Yes. Kindle has accepted EPUB directly since 2022; email the file to your device or copy it across.

Do the cover and table of contents survive?

Yes. The browser rebuilds the archive entry by entry and only rewrites the chapter files that received a translation, so everything else passes through untouched.

The whole book, in parallel

The app builds the bilingual version of the entire book, with tap-to-look-up and your reading position synced across devices.
