Make an English-Chinese bilingual book

Each English paragraph with its Chinese translation directly beneath it, in one EPUB. The English stays in front of you; the Chinese is there when a sentence stops making sense.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

For a Chinese reader working through an English book, the expensive moment is not the unfamiliar word — it is stopping. Look a word up and you lose thirty seconds and the thread of the sentence. A parallel text costs you a glance.

Your browser opens the EPUB, finds each paragraph, and inserts the Chinese underneath as a sibling paragraph, inside the original file. Chapters, table of contents and cover all survive because only the chapter documents that receive a translation are touched.

Stacked rather than facing columns, and for Chinese that matters twice over: columns fight EPUB's reflow, and Chinese characters at narrow column widths get uncomfortable line breaks that a stacked layout never produces.

How it works

  1. Choose an English EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The bilingual file is assembled in your browser, not on a server.

  2. The model reads the whole book

Names, places and recurring terms are fixed once so the Chinese does not drift between chapters.

  3. Chinese is inserted under each paragraph

Each paragraph gets its translation styled beneath it, distinguishable at a glance.

  4. Read it here, or on any device

The file keeps its own fonts and stylesheets, so CJK text displays exactly as the book intended.

The trap, and the honest limits

Your eye will go to the Chinese first. It is easier and it is right there. Read the English paragraph first, every time. Reading the translation first means finishing the book having practised very little.

Fifteen pages get translations. The rest of the book stays in English in the same file.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job ends. The file never leaves your device.

Stacked, not side-by-side. Facing columns need a wide screen and fight the format.

Questions

Which side should I read first?

English first, every paragraph. Sit in the not-understanding for a moment before you look down. Reading the Chinese first means you can finish a whole book having practised almost nothing.

Will it open on a Kindle?

Yes. Kindle has accepted EPUB directly since 2022 — email it to your device or copy it across.

Do the cover and table of contents survive?

Yes. The browser rebuilds the archive entry by entry and only rewrites the chapter files that received a translation. Cover, navigation and metadata are passed through untouched.

How is this different from a plain translation tool?

Same engine, different output. The translation tool replaces the English with Chinese; this one keeps both, which is what makes it useful for reading practice rather than just for reading.

The whole book, bilingual

The app builds the bilingual version of the entire book, with tap-to-look-up, pinyin and pronunciation, and your position synced across devices.
