Plenty of free converters produce a .docx by renaming an HTML file and hoping Word opens it. Word usually will, which is why the trick survives — but what you get is a document with no real styles, an empty navigation pane and formatting that falls apart the moment anyone edits it.
This writes a genuine Office Open XML document instead. Chapters become Heading 1 paragraphs that each start a new page, sub-headings take their own levels, quotations get the Quote style and lists become real Word lists. The practical difference is that the navigation pane matches the book's table of contents, the styles pane works, and Track Changes behaves exactly as it does on a document someone typed.
The usual reason to want this is that a book has to go somewhere Word lives: an editor who marks up in Track Changes, a translator working bilingually in two columns, a rights department that wants a manuscript rather than an ebook, or simply you, wanting to fix a typo and convert it back.
Format by format
| What it does | EPUB | DOCX |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Reading on a screen | Writing and editing |
| Layout | Reflows to the device | Fixed pages with margins and page numbers |
| Structure | The OPF spine and nav document | Named styles and an automatic table of contents |
| Editing | Needs an ebook editor such as Sigil or Calibre | Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Pages |
| Review workflow | None | Track Changes and comments |
| Hand it to | A reader | An editor, a translator, a publisher |
What actually changes
This writes genuine Office Open XML with real Word styles, so Track Changes, the navigation pane and the styles pane all work. What it does not do is reproduce the book's visual design — that lived in CSS, and Word has no use for it.
What survives
What does not
How it works
Its metadata and chapter list appear straight away, before you commit to anything.
Headings become Heading 1 to 4, quotes become Quote, lists become lists.

FAQ
Yes. This is a real Office Open XML file, not HTML with a .docx name, so every Word feature works on it normally — revisions, comments, the styles pane and the navigation pane included.
Not yet — this conversion carries text and structure. Use the image extractor to pull the pictures out separately, or convert to HTML if you need them inline.
Yes, with the Word to EPUB tool on this site. Editing in Word and converting back is a normal round trip. Each pass simplifies the styling a little, so do your editing in one place rather than bouncing the file back and forth.
Because that is what a manuscript looks like, and because it makes Word's navigation pane match the book's own table of contents — which is the thing that makes a long document navigable at all.
Yes, and that is the main reason for using real Heading styles rather than bold text. Open the navigation pane in Word and you get the book's chapter list, clickable.
Yes. Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer and Apple Pages all read Office Open XML. Styles carry across; how faithfully the page layout renders varies a little between them, as it does for any .docx.
Only if it is DRM-free. A book locked to a store account cannot be opened by this tool, and removing DRM is not something we support.
DualBook does the first pass for you — a full translation you can then edit in Word.
