Translate an Urdu book into Hindi

Upload an Urdu EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in Hindi. Going this way has one problem the other direction does not: Urdu leaves out the short vowels, and Devanagari cannot.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

The Perso-Arabic script writes the consonants and expects the reader to supply the vowels. Devanagari writes them all. So converting Urdu to Hindi means deciding, for every word, which vowels were meant — and although a fluent reader does this without noticing, a system that guesses wrong produces a word that is spelled confidently and is a different word.

That is a context problem, not a lookup problem. Reading the whole book first is what narrows the possibilities: knowing the subject, the cast and the recurring vocabulary makes the vowelling reliable, and makes a term that was resolved one way in chapter one resolve the same way in chapter nine.

The register moves too, though less far than in the other direction: heavily Persianate vocabulary may need a more familiar Hindi equivalent, depending on how the book reads.

How it works

  1. Choose your Urdu EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.

  2. The model reads the whole book

Context from the whole book is what supplies the missing short vowels, and what keeps a recurring word spelled the same way.

  3. The first 15 pages come back in Hindi

About 4,500 words as a complete EPUB in Devanagari, set left-to-right the way a Hindi book should be.

Honest limits

Vowels are inferred. The Urdu did not write them. Reading the whole book makes the inference well-grounded rather than certain, and an unusual name is the hard case.

Poetry flattens. A couplet quoted mid-paragraph converts, but the fact that it was a familiar quotation does not.

Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.

Questions

How are the missing vowels supplied?

From context — the subject of the book, the cast, the recurring vocabulary, all established before any converting starts. It is exactly the kind of decision that cannot be made from a single word and is straightforward once the whole text has been read.

Does the vocabulary change too?

Some of it. Everyday language is the same in both, so most sentences convert unchanged; the heavily Persianate literary vocabulary may move towards more familiar Hindi words depending on the book's register.

Are names spelled consistently?

Yes, and it is worth checking first — names are where vowelling goes wrong most often, so the guide fixes each one before the sample is produced.

How much is free?

About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day.
