Upload an Urdu EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in English. Literary Urdu draws its vocabulary from Persian and Arabic and its grammar from somewhere else entirely, and a translation has to hear both.
The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.
The everyday spoken language is close to Hindi. The literary register is not: it reaches into Persian and Arabic for a vocabulary that carries a specific formality and a specific history, and a translation that renders it in plain contemporary English throws away most of what the sentence was doing. Register, in this pair, is not a finishing touch.
Prose also tends to carry poetry inside it — a couplet quoted mid-paragraph, assumed known. Translated literally it becomes a flat statement; the fact that it is a quotation, and that the reader was expected to recognise it, is the part that does not survive.
Reading the whole book first gives the guide that keeps the register and the names steady: honorifics, forms of address, recurring terms and each person's romanised name are fixed before a word is translated.
A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.
Names, honorifics and recurring terms are collected first, so one person keeps one romanisation throughout.
About 4,500 words as a complete EPUB, set left-to-right the way an English book should be.
Three forms of address become one. English has a single "you". The distance or intimacy Urdu states outright has to be carried by tone, and some of it does not cross.
Quoted poetry flattens. A couplet dropped into a paragraph is translated for meaning; that it was a quotation, and a familiar one, is not something English can carry in the same breath.
Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words.
The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.
As far as English allows. Where an honorific carries real information about a relationship, it is kept or rendered in the surrounding words; where it would only clutter, the register carries it instead. What is guaranteed is that the same person is addressed the same way throughout the sample.
Yes, and it is the register that decides how the English reads. A book written in the high literary style is not translated into plain modern English, because the formality is part of what the book is saying.
It works the same way. The vocabulary is read for what it is, and reading the whole book first is what keeps a colloquial voice colloquial instead of drifting into formality partway through.
About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day.
