Upload a Japanese EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in Vietnamese. This is one of the few pairs where the politeness system does not get destroyed on the way across, because both languages have one.
The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.
Translating Japanese into English loses the honorifics: English has no way to say that this speaker is junior to that one. Vietnamese does. Its pronouns are built out of family terms that encode relative age in every sentence, so anh, chị, em and the rest can carry what ‐san, ‐kun and keigo were carrying. The information transfers rather than evaporating.
The vocabulary helps too. A large part of Japanese's abstract vocabulary comes from Chinese, and so does a large part of Vietnamese's — which means many formal and technical terms correspond closely, in a way they do not between Japanese and any European language.
What still has to be decided once, from the whole book, is who stands where. The model reads the entire text first and maps the cast and their relative ages before translating, because Vietnamese cannot write a single line of dialogue without that.
A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.
The cast and their relative ages are mapped once — which is what makes the Vietnamese pronouns come out right.
About 4,500 words, with Japanese politeness carried by the Vietnamese pronoun system rather than dropped.
A complete EPUB with the book's own styling. Vietnamese diacritics render everywhere.
Relative age is inferred. The book usually shows it; where it does not, the guide makes a consistent choice rather than a certain one.
Vertical text becomes horizontal. Japanese books are often set vertically; the Vietnamese sample reads horizontally, which is the only way Vietnamese is written.
Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words.
The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.
Much more than they survive into English. Vietnamese pronouns state the relationship between speaker and listener in every sentence, so the social information Japanese carries in suffixes and verb forms has somewhere to land. It is not identical, but it is not thrown away either.
Yes. Both languages built their formal vocabulary from the same Chinese roots, so a great many abstract and technical terms have close counterparts — which is why this pair reads more naturally than Japanese into a European language.
Ruby is reading help for the Japanese original and has no purpose in the Vietnamese, so it is not carried across. The main text is translated; the ruby annotations are not reproduced.
About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day per person.
