Translate an English book into Dutch

Upload an English EPUB and get the first fifteen pages back in Dutch. Dutch looks close enough to English to be translated word by word, which is exactly the trap — the verbs are not where English left them.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

Dutch puts the finite verb second in a main clause and sends it to the end in a subordinate one. That means a sentence cannot be converted as it is read: you have to know how the English clause finishes before you can place the Dutch verb. A translator that works left to right produces sentences that are individually comprehensible and collectively unmistakable as machine output.

The second decision is je versus u. English "you" hides it; Dutch does not, and the modern convention is looser than German's or French's, which makes it easier to get subtly wrong. A book has to settle who is addressed how, and hold it.

So the model reads the whole text before translating: the cast, the relationships, the names and the recurring terms go into a guide, and the sample is written against it.

How it works

  1. Choose your English EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The file stays on your device; only the text of the sample is sent.

  2. The model reads the whole book

The cast and the je/u map are settled once, from the complete text.

  3. The first 15 pages come back in Dutch

About 4,500 words, rebuilt as Dutch sentences with the verbs where Dutch puts them.

  4. Download, or read it here

A complete EPUB. The translation paragraphs are set to wrap, so a long compound noun cannot push the page sideways.

What this free tool does not do

Fifteen pages, not the book. About 4,500 words, counted in words.

Compounds are written as compounds. Dutch joins words that English keeps apart, and the styling lets a long one wrap rather than overflow — it does not insert hyphens that do not belong.

No Flemish on request. The Dutch written here is standard; it will not produce Belgian vocabulary because you ask for it.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job finishes.

Questions

Does it get Dutch word order right?

That is the thing to check first. Sentences are understood and rebuilt rather than converted clause by clause, which is the only way to put the finite verb in second position in a main clause and at the end of a subordinate one — and it is where word-by-word translation into Dutch always gives itself away.

How is je vs u decided?

From the relationships mapped across the whole book, then held. Dutch usage is less rigid than German or French, which makes an inconsistent choice easier to make and just as noticeable.

Do long compound nouns break the layout?

No. The inserted paragraphs carry styling that lets an over-long word break across lines instead of forcing the page to scroll sideways on a phone.

How much is free?

About 4,500 words, roughly fifteen pages, five books a day per person.
