Make an English-Vietnamese bilingual book

Each English paragraph with its Vietnamese directly underneath, in one EPUB. Read the English first and glance down only when a sentence stops making sense — that order is the whole method.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

The reason people abandon an English book is rarely that it is too hard. It is the cost of not understanding. A dictionary lookup takes thirty seconds and your place in the sentence. A glance down the page takes half a second.

That is the entire case for parallel text, and it is why the format long predates machine translation — Loeb has printed Greek facing English since 1911.

Your browser opens your EPUB, finds each paragraph, and inserts the Vietnamese directly beneath it — inside the original file, so the cover, the table of contents and every chapter survive intact.

Stacked rather than facing columns, deliberately. EPUB reflows text to the screen, so true side-by-side columns always break, and on a phone — where most reading in Vietnam actually happens — two columns become too narrow to read.

How it works

  1. Choose an English EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The bilingual file is assembled in your browser, not on a server.

  2. The model reads the whole book

Character names, how people address each other, tone — decided once so the Vietnamese does not drift between chapters.

  3. Vietnamese is inserted under each paragraph

Each paragraph gets its translation styled beneath it, so your eye can tell the two apart at a glance.

  4. Read it here, or on your phone

The stacked layout reads well on a phone. Open it in the browser reader here, or move it to your ereader.

The trap, and the honest limits

Your eye will drop to the Vietnamese. It is easier and it is right there. Read the English paragraph first, every time, and sit with not understanding for a moment — that moment is the practice. Read the translation first and you will finish the book exactly as good at English as you started.

Fifteen pages get translations. The rest of the book stays in English in the same file.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job ends; the file never leaves your device.

Stacked, not columns. Facing columns need a wide screen and fight the way EPUB reflows.

Questions

Which side should I read first?

English first, without exception. A practical trick: cover the Vietnamese with a finger, so looking down becomes a decision rather than a reflex.

Will it work on a Kindle?

Yes. Kindle has accepted EPUB directly since 2022 — email it to your Send-to-Kindle address or copy it across.

Do the cover and table of contents survive?

Yes. Your browser rebuilds the archive entry by entry and changes only the chapter files that receive translations, so the cover, contents and metadata come through untouched.

How is this different from the translate tool?

Same engine, different output. The translate tool replaces the original text; this one keeps both so you can check one against the other.

What level is this for?

Around B1 and up works best. Use the page test: open a page in the middle and count the words you do not know. Three to six is the right level. More than twelve means pick an easier book first.

A bilingual edition of the whole book

The app builds the full parallel text, adds tap-to-define with pronunciation, and keeps your place and highlights across devices.
