Make an English-German bilingual book

Each English paragraph with its German translation directly beneath it, in one EPUB. Read the English first; the German is there for the sentence that will not come apart.

The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.

A parallel text earns its keep differently in German than in most pairs. What usually stops a learner here is not a word but a structure — a clause with its verb parked at the end, or a compound noun standing in for a phrase. A dictionary cannot help with either, because nothing is missing from your vocabulary. Seeing the whole sentence rendered the other way is the only thing that resolves it, and that is exactly what sits under each paragraph.

Your browser opens the EPUB, walks every paragraph and inserts the German beneath it as a sibling paragraph inside the original file. Only chapter documents that actually receive a translation are rewritten, so cover, navigation, stylesheet and metadata come through as they were.

The translation paragraphs carry styling that lets long compounds wrap. That is not a nicety: a forty-letter noun in a narrow phone column is what makes most hand-made bilingual files scroll sideways.

How it works

  1. Choose an English EPUB

A DRM-free EPUB. The bilingual file is assembled in your browser, not on a server.

  2. The model reads the whole book

Names, terms and the Sie/du map are fixed once, so the German under chapter five matches the German under chapter one.

  3. German is inserted under each paragraph

Each translation is styled beneath its paragraph — and German's capitalised nouns make the two blocks easy to tell apart at a glance, even before you read a word.

  4. Read it here, or on any device

A complete EPUB carrying the book's own fonts and stylesheets.

The trap, and the honest limits

Your eye will go to the German — or, if you are German, straight past the English. Read the original paragraph first, every time. The few seconds of not understanding are the practice.

Fifteen pages get translations. The rest of the book stays in English inside the same file.

The German takes more room. Expect the translated paragraphs to run longer than the English above them; that is the language, not a formatting fault.

The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job ends. The file never leaves your device.

Questions

Which side should I read first?

The original, every paragraph. Sit with the confusion for a moment before you look down — with German that moment is usually a structure clicking into place, which is worth more than a looked-up word.

Do long German words break the page on a phone?

No. The inserted paragraphs are styled to let an over-long compound break across lines rather than force the page to scroll sideways — which is the single most common defect in hand-made German bilingual files.

Will it open on a Kindle?

Yes. Kindle has accepted EPUB directly since 2022; email it to your device or copy it across.

Do the cover and table of contents survive?

Yes. The browser rebuilds the archive entry by entry and only rewrites the chapter files that received a translation, so everything else passes through untouched.

The whole book, in parallel

The app builds the bilingual version of the entire book, with tap-to-look-up and your reading position synced across devices.
