Each English paragraph with its French translation directly beneath it, in one EPUB. The English stays in front of you; the French is there for the sentence that refuses to resolve.
The first 15 pages of text are sent to our server to be translated. The file itself stays on your device.
French and English share an enormous amount of vocabulary, which is exactly what makes reading one in the other frustrating. You understand ninety per cent of a page effortlessly and then one clause stops you — and because so much was easy, you cannot tell which word broke it. Looking up three candidates costs a minute and the thread of the paragraph. Reading the translation underneath costs a glance.
Your browser opens the EPUB, finds every paragraph and inserts the French beneath it as a sibling paragraph inside the original file. Only the chapter documents that receive a translation are rewritten, so cover, navigation, stylesheet and metadata survive exactly as they were.
The layout is stacked. Facing columns cannot hold alignment in a format that reflows to the reader's screen, and French paragraphs run roughly a fifth longer than the English they came from, so paired columns would drift out of step within a page.
A DRM-free EPUB. The bilingual file is assembled in your browser, not on a server.
Names, terms and the tu/vous map are fixed once, so the French under chapter four matches the French under chapter one.
Each translation is styled beneath its paragraph, easy to tell apart without being intrusive.
A complete EPUB carrying the book's own fonts and stylesheets.
Your eye will go to the French — or, if you are French, straight past the English. Read the original paragraph first, every time. The few seconds of not understanding are the entire point; skipping them means reading a translation with extra steps.
Fifteen pages get translations. The rest of the book stays in English inside the same file.
The text is sent to a server and discarded when the job ends. The file never leaves your device.
Stacked, not side-by-side. Columns fight EPUB reflow and go out of step as soon as the French runs longer.
The original, every paragraph. Sit with the confusion for a moment before you look down — that moment is the practice.
Yes. Kindle has accepted EPUB directly since 2022; email it to your device or copy it across.
Yes — guillemets and dialogue dashes, with a non-breaking space before the doubled punctuation marks, so the French block reads as French rather than as English with French words in it. Seeing both conventions on one screen is itself instructive.
Yes. The browser rebuilds the archive entry by entry and only rewrites chapter files that received a translation, so everything else passes through untouched.
